Wicca has been around since the beginning of time. It wasn't recognized as an official religion until 1954 when it was founded by Gerald Gardner. The followers of Wicca claim that it is part of the nature itself. Its roots come from the so called religion Witchcraft. Many sources today tell us about ancient rituals that today we can find in Wicca.
The elements are one of the main components of the rituals. These elements are: Air (Yellow), Fire (Red), Water (Blue), Earth (Green). Some adds a fifth element called Spirit or Akasha. In fact Akasha in Hindi means sky. It is the element on the top of the pentagram which is used. It is said that there is nothing that is not made of these five elements.
Wiccans strongly believe in the Light and that no harm should be done to no one and to nothing. They speak of the so called Law of Threefold. It is that if one does something he’ll receive the effect of it multiplied by three.
Sometimes when wiccans get together they make a so called coven (gathering) and usually a priest and priestess are elected. This symbolizes the male and female aspect of the nature. The priestess is linked to the Goddess and the priest to the Gods. Usually the most supreme god is the horned god of the sun. The Goddess on the other hand is the Mother Nature itself. She is the supreme mother of all living and non-living things. She gives and takes. She is the energy and matter around us, everything that we can sense.
There are many tools that wiccans like to use. From the simple candle to the boline (the knife of the physical world) and the athame (the knife of the spiritual world used in rituals to channel energy) - they are all very important. Maybe the most important is the Book of Shadows. It contains the core rituals that are used and the personal rituals of the wiccan. It’s most likely that if a coven is formed there is a Book of Shadows for the coven too. It contains the group rituals performed by the coven. It is kept by the High Priestess or Priest.
One of the rituals that wiccans use is the esbat. Esbat is a full moon ritual but some says that it’s good if it is performed during dark moons too. Moon is used as a map. Wiccans believe that when moon begin to increase its size and light - it’s time to perform rituals of the new - everything that they need to create. When moon “dies” and just before it vanish from the sky and comes the dark moon period - they use banishing spells to liberate from all that is negative or could harm them.
During the witch trials of the Middle Ages witches were chased. The Church accused them as heresy. Even if one confess that there were white magic done it was all the same. Everything that was not the Church was heresy. The question today remains about the new wiccans. Are they really evil? Or it was all a giant mistake.
